Obituary

Mrs. Josephine Floyd Horton was born on Tuesday, July 7, 1935. A wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, she was surrounded by her children when she transitioned peacefully to her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 31, 2023. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Horton, affectionately called "Miss Josie," was born to the late Simon and Jewel Floyd in Dale County, Alabama. She married Jimmie Lee Horton on July 4, 1964.

Together they operated a dance hall, owned a café, and had several other business ventures. She retired from civil service on Fort Rucker after more than 25 years of service. She is probably most known for being someone on which anyone could rely-from delivering meals to loved ones on holidays to sitting on the porch just to talk. Together with her son, Joseph, she stayed on top of all the news that happened in Ozark. She enjoyed B.B. King, Saturday yard sales and drives down to "the line." She found joy working in her yard and spending time at any events that involved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would oftentimes put money into their hands or pockets and secretly warn them not to tell or give it to their parents. Her lemon cheese cake was a staple for every holiday, and her children traveled from near and far for her warm banana pudding. She loved her family deeply.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Horton was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie Lee Horton; her children, Nelson Newman, Linda Horton, Cynthia Moses and Katie Ward; her grandson,
Murray Horton, Jr.; her sisters, Johnnie Mae Floyd, Ada Gray, Annie Floyd and Betty Lou Thomas; and her brother, ST Floyd. She is survived by five loving daughters: Brenda (Charles) Lovett, Portia Horton; Deborah (Liz) Horton; Alicia Fells, and Cindy Horton; three devoted sons: Joseph Floyd, Jimmy Lee (Alexia) Horton, and Murray L. Horton. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Terry Horton, Kelly (Tameaca) Vincent, Ebony (Aaron) Horton Bradley, Jimmie (Nisha) Fells, Samuel Fells, Alexis Horton, James (Ananda) Ruley, Josh Ruley, Cynthia Horton, Jonathan Fells, Nelson Horton, Velvet Bozeman, Nicole Lovett, Dexter Todd, and April Mapp; and 23 great-grandchildren: Jelan Smith, Zekayden Vincent, Isaiah Horton, Braelyn Vincent, Mykelti Fells, Aven Fells, Paisley Vincent, Alicia MaKyela Fells, Madison Davis, Makenlee Fells, Devonte Lovett, Armondo Benson, DeVashia, Jeremiah and Tavaria Bozeman, Ashanti Ruley, Maison Boyd, Ezra Fells, Hezekiah Fells, Paxton Bradley, Brooklyn Ruley, Nick and Elizabeth Bradley. In addition, she is survived by two sisters, Edna Hoskins and Peggy Mackins; her brother, Albert Floyd; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
